Student Email Advisory – 23/5/18

For the attention of all Borders College students:-
ISLT have recently received warnings from Microsoft that some Borders College student email addresses have appeared in an online “paste”.
A paste is information that has been published to a publicly facing website designed to share content, usually anonymously. Often a dump of email addresses in a paste can be an indicator that those email addresses used a weak password which may have led to those email accounts being compromised.
We currently do not have conclusive evidence that any student email accounts have been compromised and have only received warnings for certain student accounts. Despite this, out of an abundance of caution, we are emailing all current students to ask them to take steps to update their email account password.
Students can update their password by following the steps below:
1. Log on to a college PC using your current username and password
2. Once logged in press the ctrl+alt+del keys at the same time
3. On the screen that appears choose ‘Change a password’
4. Follow the on screen instructions to change your password
Your new password must be at least eight characters and it’s a good idea to mix letters, capital letters and numbers or symbols.
Please be aware that this will change your password for logging into college PCs, accessing student email and logging in to Office 365.
If you have any problems or questions please contact the Helpdesk at the Galashiels campus or via helpdesk@borderscollege.ac.uk
